Wellness · The quiet hours

Heat, cold water, and a closed door — taken in that order.

Five rooms, read as one descent. The rail on the left holds the temperature of whichever you are standing in.

The sanctuary at The Meridian — pool, thermal circuit and treatment rooms

01 The pool

Twenty-five metres, and the lake through glass.

The pool is held at twenty-eight — warm enough to stay in, cool enough to swim properly. It faces the water through a single wall of glass, so the light in it changes all day and the room has never needed decorating.

02 Thermal circuit

Heat first. The circuit assumes nothing else.

Ninety degrees of dry heat, then steam, then water cold enough to argue with. There is no attendant and no schedule — the order is posted on the wall in three lines, and the rest of it is left to you.

03 The plunge

Twelve degrees. Count to twenty.

The plunge is the smallest room in the sanctuary and the only one with a clock. Twenty seconds is the house recommendation; most people find that is enough, and the walk back to the heat is the point of the whole circuit.

04 Sauna & steam

Timber at seventy-five, stone at forty.

Two rooms set apart from the circuit, for anyone who would rather sit than move. The sauna is timber and dry; the steam room is stone and holds its temperature low, so you can stay in it a great deal longer.

05 Rest

The room with nothing in it to do.

Rest is a temperature too: twenty-one degrees, low light, and no reason to be anywhere else. Eight treatment rooms open off the same corridor, so an appointment begins and ends without ever crossing the estate.
